Hi ECCC Presidents,
Would you please help us get the word out for this community event taking place at Pope on March 17th. Can you please publish it in your weekly e-blasts through March 16th.
Cobb County News
On March 17th, the Pope High School Stadium turf field will be the site of the 6th annual AJO4LAX Fest – the largest GHSA sanctioned varsity lacrosse event of the season. This year’s match-ups feature ten highly rated area teams:
Game 1 – 9 AM – Pace Academy vs. Wheeler HS
Game 2 – 11 AM – Decatur HS vs. The Westminster School
Game 3 – 1 PM – Roswell HS vs. Lambert HS
Game 4 – 3 PM – Northview HS vs. Lassiter HS
Game 5 – 5 PM – The Lovett School vs. Pope HS
Tickets are being sold at the door: $7 for adults and $3 for children, under 12. One ticket is good for admission to all five games. Proceeds benefit the Andrew Oswald Memorial Fund, LTD. Oswald played attack for the Pope HS Greyhounds from 2002-2004. He wore jersey #4 and lacrosse was his passion.
The Memorial fund was created in 2005 after Andrew was tragically killed in a single-car accident in Marietta. To date more than $100,000 has been raised and donated to provide scholarships, support the growth of local high school and youth lacrosse, and fund teen safe-driving initiatives in memory of Oswald and his love for the game.
.
“We have expanded our mission this year to also include helping teens make the right ‘life’ decisions”, said Bruce Oswald, Andrew’s father and President of the Andrew J. Oswald Memorial Fund, Ltd. “We have lost too many lacrosse players over the last eight years to accidents, suicide, fraternity hazing and other incidents. Our goal is to work with area players, coaches and parents to help improve decision making and communication.”
Additional information on the AJO4LAX Foundation, the upcoming AJO4LAX Fest, scholarship applications, making a tax-deductible donation, as well as a full history of the Fund’s donations and grants can be found at www.ajo4lax.com.
Thank you for your support for this worthwhile cause!

Go Green, Donate Books
If you have some gently used books, the Cobb County Public Library System is gladly accepting them.
- By Julia Harris
Are your books collecting dust? Donate them to the Cobb County Public Library System.
Donations from the public support the ongoing and special book sales held by the Friends of the Cobb County Public Library System, which in turn support the library system’s book budget.
The Friends’ book sale raises money for the library system’s existing book budget, which has been reduced 17 percent in the past 12 months.
“We have had a substantial decrease in our funding from the state and from Cobb County,” library director Helen Poyer said. “The Friends organization is helping the library make ends meet at a time when demand for books has increased dramatically. And by recycling their books by donating them to the library, the public is helping not only the environment, but also the library and the community.”
The Friends hold two large semiannual book sales and several special book sales throughout the year. The next semiannual sale will be at Jim R. Miller Park on Oct. 14, 15 and 16.
The book sales have raised almost $80,000 in the past year, but the continued success of the sales depends on donations.
Books in high demand include popular fiction and children’s books.
East Cobb residents can drop off books at the East Cobb, East Marietta or Mountain View Regionallibraries or any other location of the Cobb County Public Library System. Donations are tax-deductible.

Wheeler High School Academic Booster Club (ABC) was founded in 1994 to promote and enhance academic success and achievement for all students at Wheeler High School. Seventeen years later, our unique organization is still going strong, sponsoring various student academic recognition programs, college preparation information, SAT classes, mock SAT/ACT testing, tutoring support, college fairs, teacher grants for academic enhancement, teacher recognition, and so much more!
We welcome you to join ABC’s board of volunteers for the 2011 – 2012 school year. Giving a bit of your time and energy in the school or at home at your convenience is a wonderful way to become connected with your child’s high school. You will become familiar with the school staff and administration, teachers, parents and students in day to day activities.
Please let us know your interest in supporting the Wheeler ABC organization. We look forward to welcoming you as a valued volunteer for the Wheeler High School Academic Booster Club!

JUNIOR WILDCAT WRESTLING
Dear East Cobb Community,
Wheeler High School will be starting a Junior Wildcat Wrestling program for the2011-2012 season. I am currently in the process of looking for those who may be interested, both competing and coaching. Youth wrestling is a winter season sport that runs from the 1st of November until the end of February. Practices are generally held 2 nights a week, with tournaments on weekends throughout the season.
The sport of wrestling is a very natural thing for kids to do at a young age.Children are always wrestling around in the yard or on the carpet in the house. Organized wrestling can bring in an element of safety and has many other benefits as well. The sport of wrestling helps young people develop important qualities such as self-esteem, sportsmanship, work ethic and leadership skills. It also helps by instilling a competitive edge.
Wrestling is a great sport because anybody can do it. Because you wrestle people of your same weight, size is not an issue. Wrestling is also open to both genders. Over the past ten years, the number of girls involved in the sport of wrestling in this country has gone from 300 to 3,700, so it is a sport that is on the rise for young females.
If you are interested in helping coach, or know of any students who are interested in participating, please contact me. Wheeler will be holding open mat practices during the month of June and official youth registration will be mid-September.
